UNBOUND

Reimagining the User Experience of True Wireless Earbuds

Designed in 2017, when true wireless earbuds were still in their infancy, UNBOUND explored practical solutions to common challenges such as battery life, charging convenience, wearing stability, and everyday usability.

Opportunity

The introduction of true wireless earbuds marked a major shift in personal audio, delivering complete freedom from cables. However, early products also introduced new challenges that affected the overall user experience. This project explores how those challenges could be addressed through a more thoughtful product ecosystem.

Market Landscape True Wireless Earbuds in 2017

Despite different approaches, most early true wireless earbuds shared similar usability challenges that shaped the direction of this project.

01. Wearable Battery Module

Challenge

Early true wireless earbuds (2015–2017) offered only a few hours of playback, requiring users to stop listening while the earbuds recharged.

Design Response

A wearable battery module extends listening time by an additional 4–5 hours, enables charging while in use for uninterrupted listening, and provides magnetic docking for convenient everyday carry.

02. Integrated Charging Case

Challenge

Charging the case required users to carry a separate cable, making charging less convenient while on the go.

Design Response

An integrated USB connector allows the charging case to plug directly into a USB port, eliminating the need to carry an additional charging cable.

03. Slim Stem Architecture

Challenge

Other true wireless earbuds often had a bulky in-ear form because the battery and electronics were packed inside the earbuds.

Design Response

A stem-style architecture minimizes the portion inserted into the ear canal, improving long-term comfort while maintaining a secure fit.

Design Development

The concept was shaped through an iterative process of exploration, development, prototyping, and user validation.

Explore

Explored a wide range of concepts through rapid sketching to identify opportunities for improving the true wireless earbud experience.

Develop

Refined the most promising concepts into a cohesive product system, balancing functionality, ergonomics, and manufacturability

Prototype

Built full-scale 3D-printed prototypes to evaluate form, ergonomics, assembly, and overall usability.

Validate

Conducted user evaluations to assess comfort, usability, and overall product experience, using feedback to refine the final design.
